As Human Rights Watch's director of global initiatives, I lead international outreach and advocacy campaigns, overseeing research, advocacy and communications on sport and human rights, fighting “sportswashing,” and pressing for powerful sports bodies like FIFA and the IOC to adopt human rights standards. Research includes documenting systemic child abuse, sexual abuse and harassment in sport. I have taught at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs since 2013. Before joining Human Rights Watch in 1998, I worked in Hong Kong as an adviser to Democratic Party chairman Martin Lee and as a speechwriter at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. I speak Cantonese and German, and wrote and edited three books: Torture, China's Great Leap, and The Unfinished Revolution. I serve on the boards of several non-profits, including The Human Trafficking Legal Center and the Center for Human Rights in Iran.
