I am Vanderbilt University’s ninth chancellor. I combine my expertise in political science and management with a lifelong career in academia to foster a campus culture that prizes transformative education, pathbreaking discovery and innovation, and free speech. I’ve published five books and more than 100 research articles, spanning fields from political science and economics and management to linguistics, sociology, psychology and operations research. As a management scholar my work has focused on crisis and reputation management as well the relationship between business and politics. I have held leadership and faculty roles at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, where I served as provost. I’m a first-generation college graduate and native of Berlin, Germany. I earned my Ph.D. and master’s degree from the University of Rochester and hold master’s degrees from the University of Munich and the University of Southern California.
